Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is a distinctive, long-lived deciduous tree admired for its unique fan-shaped leaves and outstanding golden-yellow fall color. Typically reaching 40–80 feet tall, it is extremely tolerant of urban conditions, including pollution, heat, and compacted soils. Ginkgo grows best in full sun and well-drained soil but adapts to a wide range of soil types once established. It is drought tolerant after establishment and requires minimal maintenance; male cultivars are preferred to avoid the messy, foul-smelling fruit produced by females. Ginkgo is cold hardy in USDA Zones 3–8.
