Miscanthus × giganteus, commonly known as Giant Miscanthus, is a dramatic ornamental grass valued for its tall, upright form and lush, bamboo-like appearance. This sterile hybrid grass typically reaches 10–14 feet tall and 4–6 feet wide at maturity, creating an excellent screen, windbreak, or bold landscape accent. It has a fast growth rate, often reaching near full height within a single growing season once established. Giant Miscanthus grows best in full sun, where it develops strong stems and dense growth, and prefers well-drained soil, though it is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including heavier soils. It benefits from regular moisture during establishment but is drought tolerant once established. Cut back old growth to the ground in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge to maintain a clean, vigorous stand.
Miscanthus x Giganteus is an excellent screening for wildlife viewing and or hunting. A stand of miscanthus will allow wildlife access without being disturbed, it provides a calming barrier to enter and exit food plots and or additional bedding areas. Thick stands will provide some shelter from wind and snow.
