Sky Pencil Holly

  Sky Pencil Holly (Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’) is a striking, upright evergreen shrub prized for its narrow, columnar form that adds strong vertical interest to landscapes. Typically reaching 6–10 feet tall and only 2–3 feet wide, it is ideal for tight spaces, entryways, foundation plantings, or as a formal accent. Sky Pencil Holly has a slow to moderate growth rate, generally adding 6–12 inches per year once established. Its small, glossy, dark green leaves resemble boxwood, and female plants may produce small black berries in fall if a male pollinator is nearby. This holly performs best in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It prefers consistent moisture, especially during establishment, but does not tolerate wet or poorly drained soils. Minimal pruning is needed due to its naturally upright habit, making Sky Pencil Holly a low-maintenance and elegant choice for structured landscapes.
